Is the microphone of your laptop not working? Here is how you can fix it.

Sometimes you connect your microphone to your PC and find that it isn’t working. What to do? Is the problem with Windows or the microphone? Well, it’s difficult to find out the fault at a glance. However, you can perform the following checks

Check 1: Ensure that you have permitted applications to access the microphone

When you update your Windows, your microphone may not be recognised. In that case, you will need to offer permission to the apps to use it. Follow these steps.

A) Select StartSettingsPrivacy  > Microphone. Choose the Change  Turn on the Allow apps to access your microphone setting.

B) Now you can pick which apps can access the features under the categories named Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your microphone and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.

Check 2: If you are not audible to others

Follow these steps.

A) If you have an external microphone, ensure that it’s not physically muted.

B) Ensure that you’ve set your microphone to default. If not, follow these steps.

  • Select StartSettings  > System > Sound.
  • In Input, choose your microphone in Choose your input device.
  • You can also Test your microphone to ensure that the Windows is getting the signals.

Check 3: The microphone volume does not appear to be working at all

Follow these steps.

A) Ensure that you’ve inserted the microphone jack / USB properly into the computer.

B) Increase the volume of your microphone in the following steps.

  • Select StartSettings > System > Sound.
  • In Input, pick your microphone under Choose your input device category and select Device Properties.
  • On the Levels tab, adjust the Microphone and Microphone Boostsliders and click OK.
  • Speak into your microphone while checking under Test your microphone. If you observe the line gaining from left to right, your microphone is working.

If your microphone is still not working, the problem perhaps maybe with one or more of the following.

A) the microphone itself(in case of both the internal and external microphones), or

B) the jack / USB of the microphone(in case of the external microphone)

C) the port of the PC you are inserting your microphone into(in case of the external microphone)
